Mary Ann and Helen, with their husbands Nathaniel and James, were baptized in 1843, just 3 years after Wilford Woodruff commenced missionary work in the area.

Nathaniel and Mary Ann had 12 children, 8 of whom lived to adulthood. (John's death is not documented, but Paul was referred to by Nathaniel as the eldest son.)

Nathaniel was a shepherd in Avening, and worked with Richard Horsfall, a cotton factory supervisor, in Halifax. Nathaniel, Mary Ann, and Enoch also operated a pub.

Immigration to Utah

Mary Ann's sister, Helen, had immigrated to Utah with her family around 1860. In 1876, she encouraged Charles Evans, a local missionary called to serve in England, to reach out to the Ludlow family in Halifax. He did so, baptizing Nathaniel and Mary Ann (again) and some of the family members, and inviting them to join him on his ship returning to Utah.

Enoch and his family, along with Walter, age 13, traveled with their parents by boat from Liverpool to New York, and by train to Salt Lake City. The stayed with Helen's family for the winter, then settled in Benjamin, Utah.
