Mary Ann and two of her sisters, Thirza and Helen, were introduced to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by Thirza's husband, John William Whiting. Mary Ann and Helen, with their husbands Nathaniel and James, were baptized in 1843, just 3 years after Wilford Woodruff commenced missionary work in the area.
Nathaniel was a shepherd in Avening, and after moving to Halifax, worked with Richard Horsfall, a cotton factory supervisor. Nathaniel, Mary Ann, and Enoch also operated a pub.
Immigration to Utah
Mary Ann's sister, Helen, had immigrated to Utah with her family around 1860. In 1876, she encouraged Charles Evans, a local missionary called to serve in England, to reach out to the Ludlow family in Halifax. He did so, baptizing Nathaniel and Mary Ann (again) and some of the family members, and inviting them to join him on his ship returning to Utah.
In 1878, Nathaniel and Mary Ann, joined by Enoch and his family, and Walter, age 13, traveled by boat from Liverpool to New York, and by train to Salt Lake City. They stayed with Helen's family for the winter, then settled in Benjamin, Utah Territory and took up farming.
