The county of Greater Manchester was formed in 1974. Prior to that time, its constituent cities and districts were organized as follows:
- Wigan, Salford, Bolton, Bury, Rochdale, most of Oldham, and parts of Manchester, Trafford, and Tameside belonged to Lancashire
- Stockport and parts of Manchester, Trafford, and Tameside belonged to Cheshire
- The Saddleworth portion of Oldham district belonged to the West Riding of Yorkshire (and is now adjacent to West Yorkshire)
