They were joined by their friends the Herbert family, which Mary Jane later married into. They settled in Provo.

Friction with the church leadership in Provo led to George & Mary and some of their children being disfellowshipped from the church, and a few years later relocating to Benjamin. There, they began participating in the Presbyterian Church in Payson, and with David, Mary Jane, Caleb, and their families, helped to establish the Presbyterian Church of Benjamin.

In Benjamin, George and Mary shared a house with David and his family. Family members farmed, grew fruit trees, and kept bees.
