Woodrow joined the National Guard in March 1941, early in World War II (a few months before the Pearl Harbor attack). Kirk was born three months later during training in California. When Woodrow was deployed to the Pacific Theater, Alta and Kirk returned to Utah, living at 335 S Main St, Spanish Fork.

After military service, Woodrow built a house at 250 West 100 South in Spanish Fork, adjacent to his parents' house. They raised five children there. Woodrow worked as a truck driver for McCord Oil Company and American Oil Company. Alta worked as a restaurant cook and, in her later years, managed the Provo Temple cafeteria.
